Aluvihare Cave Temple
This cave temple is best known for being the location where the teachings of the Buddha (Damma), the Tripitaka, were initially transcribed on to manuscripts way back in the 2nd Century BC. The 10 caves each contain unique murals and inscriptions such as pre-Christian inscriptions, whereas the murals therein are from a later date. The Ancient Dagoba has been renovated now, and the Bo Tree, which was a sapling of the Sacred Sri Maha Boddhiya, is now a full grown tree itself. The Sri Maha Boddhiya is the oldest recorded tree in the world today.
